Why Middle Aged Men Tend To Start Using Steroids?
Experts claim a growing number of middle-aged men are turning to anabolic steroids to look and feel younger and improve their sexual prowess.
People who work with users have expressed alarm about a new trend among men in their 40s and 50s, and even some in their 60s and 70s, who are taking the medication to increase energy and combat some of the consequences of aging, such as weight gain and a diminished libido. Steroids have been linked to a variety of health issues, including heart disease and blood clots.
“We’ve seen a lot of older males doing it.” It’s similar to hormone replacement therapy for women [which is used to alleviate menopausal symptoms]. Steroids can also aid in weight loss, according to Julien Baker, an applied physiology professor at the University of the West of Scotland.
“It’s a huge issue, but there’s no proof yet on the long-term consequences.” We don’t know what these medicines do to you at that age, but everyone thinks they’re harmless.”
Men’s testosterone levels decline as they age, which can result in decreased sex drive, weight gain, and muscle loss. Men learn about the drug, which mimics the effects of testosterone and stimulates muscular building, via publications and the internet, according to Baker, but some are also prescribed it.
While over-50s still make up a small percentage of the population using image and performance-enhancing pharmaceuticals, their numbers have increased in the last five years, according to Joseph Kean, a visiting research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University. In the UK, he estimated that between 15,000 and 30,000 over-40s used it.
“Guys are stating they just want to stand a little taller so they can compete with the younger generation, who are considerably more conscious of their appearance,” Kean explained. He went on to say that older males tended to take lesser amounts of the substance less frequently than younger men.
A typical steroid cycle lasts three months, beginning with lower doses and gradually increasing before tapering off. “You may be taking steroids every day and injecting four times a week at its peak,” Kean added. “Older guys tend to take fewer injections, but over a longer period of time – one every seven to ten days, and sometimes virtually daily.”
The Juice Clinic in Sheffield, which helps people who use steroid-usa and other image-enhancing substances, has seen an upsurge in the number of older males seeking help.
“For older men, steroid use is typically about the youthful results, as well as body image and energy levels,” said the clinic’s team leader, Sid Wiffen. “I’ve heard that males are under more pressure to look good these days, so they’re more inclined to go to the gym and dress nicely.”
“It has the potential to be dangerous, and it concerns me.” Many of the people we see want to make an informed decision regarding their steroid use, but others acquire their information from other sources, which isn’t always reliable.” Withdrawal symptoms such as poor mood and anxiety can develop whenever users begin to reduce or stop using steroids.
According to experts, the rising popularity of such medications may be due to cultural changes, such as people living longer and demanding more from life.
“As the population ages, there are more crucial periods in people’s lives when they are concerned about beauty,” said Jim McVeigh, a steroid expert at Liverpool John Moores University.
“You can see how men who reach a certain age and are unable to keep a specific physique naturally would be tempted to try other methods to acquire a figure that was perhaps easier to achieve 15-20 years ago.” It’s no longer solely the realm of the young to want to appear nice.”
However, a former user who requested anonymity disagreed that midlife men are under any greater pressure now than they were previously. “Steroids will be intriguing to any middle-aged man who can feel his youth fading and wants to resist the inherent vulnerabilities of middle age,” he said.
The findings are consistent with reports of rising anabolic steroid use, particularly among younger males. Persons who worked with steroid users last year estimated that the true number of people using the drug on a yearly basis was significantly greater than the 60,000 people reported in the Crime Survey for England and Wales.
The anabolic-androgenic steroids, as they’re technically termed, were first produced for medical use. Experts say it’s easy to purchase the medications online or in gyms, despite the fact that they’re still classified as a class C illegal substance. They’re available as tablets, although they’re more often injected into muscles. While there may be some benefits for older men if they follow a thorough prescription regimen, self-medication and purchasing items online come with hazards, according to Baker. “Introducing something your body has ceased making naturally may have ramifications or health issues,” he said. “There isn’t enough research to look into that.” It’s unclear what will happen to someone who takes steroids at the age of 50.”
“I’m a typical 53-year-old guy who doesn’t smoke, eats well, and takes care of himself. Three or four times a week, I go to the gym. I drink on weekends and keep a busy social schedule. For the past three years, I’ve also been on steroids.
“When I first started, I was apprehensive. I’m not a bodybuilder and have no desire to be one. The substance was obtained in my gym. I wanted to look healthy and have a decent figure with some definition, not rippling muscles. When I was younger, I never used steroids. I’m now taking a little dose once a week, and it’s making me feel great. My testosterone and other blood values are within typical limits. I know this since I have my blood checked at a local user clinic on a regular basis.
“Not only did the medicine provide me the increased muscular mass I desired, but it also made me feel better about myself and helped me sleep better.” It has improved my sex drive and given me a greater taste for life. Except for my boyfriend, who is fine with it, no one knows I’m on steroids.
“I’m not talking about taking large quantities of money. I don’t have a 60-inch chest to speak of. I’m a regular person who appears to be in good shape for his age. I have a narrow waist and a small belly, and I exercise occasionally.
“I don’t want to be mistaken for a younger man.” I’m taking the medicines for myself, to feel good and look nice. Steroids make you feel younger, and in a clichéd way, it’s like sipping a feel-good potion. For a while, all of the features of growing older, such as fatigue, are put on pause.
“In my experience, if you stop taking medication, your body ultimately returns to its usual cycle.” Then I get fatigued, and all of the typical qualities of someone in their fifties return.
“Anything in excess is harmful for you, but it’s not an issue if you take it in moderation.” It’s the same with alcohol; it’s all about moderation and consuming in proportion. Steroids should be included in this category.
“I think I’m concerned about the effects of steroids on my body in the long run.” But I’m also concerned about food chemicals and the impact of cell phones on my brain. The list goes on and on. The major issue is usually irresponsible usage and misuse.”
